望到花时过;
移花供在家;

Hope
By HU Shi
Tr. LI Zhengshuan

I came from the mountain,
Bringing an orchid with me.
I planted it in the garden,
Hoping it to bloom sweetly.
I visited it thrice per day,
But no blossom was found.
I gazed with great dismay:
No bud was to be found.
Autumn is coming soon.
I’ll move it to the warm room;
When vernal breeze returns,
I wish you angrily bloom.

Hope
By HU Shi
Tr. Rhapsodia

From the mountain I bring
An orchid flower-grass
And plant it in the yard
Hoping blooms to amass
Thrice a day I observe
Till flower time is gone
No single bud appears
My worries are hence drawn
Too soon autumn is here
I move it in with care
Till next spring breeze returns
In full bloom may you bear

等火山忍不住了缄默;

One Sentence
By WEN Yiduo
Tr. ZHAO Yizhong

There is a sentence that is a woe when said out;
And there is a sentence that can kindle about;
Though for five thousand years we have not said it clear
Can you outguess why the volcano's silent here?
Perhaps it has suddenly become possessed, too!
Suddenly there's a thunderbolt from the sky blue
A roar of thunder:
"Our China! "

Alas, how can this word let me explain today?
If you don't believe iron trees bloom, that's okay.
Then here you do listen to me for a sentence:
When the volcano could not help but silence;
Don't tremble, put out your tongue and stamp your feet, too
Let's wait for a thunderbolt out of the sky blue
A roar of thunder:
"Our China!"

A Slogan
By WEN Yiduo
Tr. WANG Changling

A slogan, once said, invites the mire,
A slogan’s able to ignite a fire.
None shouts it for five millennia, though.
Can you outguess the dormant volcano?
Sometimes the dormant volcano’ll blow,
Like a bolt out of the azure blue,
And thunder,
“China, Our China!”
In what way shall I say it today?
The sago palm never blooms? Okay.
I demand you to lend your ears to this:
When the volcano’s silence shall cease,
Shocked, don’t you ever stamp or shudder,
Just wait for a bolt out of the blue
To thunder,
“China, Our China!”

Your Name is Yuanmingyuan
By HONG Zhu
Tr. Tulip
Even if one day, you only have one brick left
This brick is still called Yuanmingyuan

Even if this brick is moved to another place
Where it has become Yuanmingyuan

Even if it’s where it was, there's no any brick left
Whoever stands here, he is Yuanmingyuan

Even if no one wants to visit here again
The ruins also know that they are Yuanmingyuan

A TREE
William Marr

after struggling with the thunderstorm all afternoon
alone
losing many leaves and suffering several broken limbs
the young tree finds itself still
standing erect
calm and serene
it declares
I am now grown up
then it melts into the woods
and becomes
part of the scenery

Coast to Coast*
By YANG Jingrong
Tr. CHEN Saihua

Love and hatred falling from the Universe into Mantle
Collided intensely and entwined wild with joy,
And then fell apart.

Thus, love gave birth to the Himalayas;
Hatred tore apart seven Continents and five Oceans.

Billions of years later, the plaintive love
Turns into the Northern and Southern lights.

*Coast to Coast

Peach Blossom Snow
By ZHOU Jianhao
Tr. WU Weixiong

A girl in her secluded boudoir long staying
Unable to deny a peach branch’s invitation
Sits up on the branch by an airy jumping.

Through her veil of spring breeze,
She peeps at the clouds dancing by.
Her inner secret longing for love
Is exposed by her cheeks red and shy.

The one she has been pining night and day
Has been led away by another peach blossom fairy.
A petal now wanders, as a drifting snowflake.

Spring Snow
By ZHOU Jianhao
Tr. NI Qinghang

A lass in a boudoir
Finally succumbs to the invitation by peach branches
And perches on one in an agile and graceful manner

Wrapped in a veil embodied by spring wind
Peeping through the clouds scudding by
She harbors a sweet secret
Exposed by blushing cheeks

The lover she has been dreaming of
Is seduced by some peach blossom fairy
A petal falls swirlingly like a snowflake

We Live on the Greens
By Li Xiong
Tr. WANG Meilan

Hey, sunshine
We live on the greens
This is a place where life is happier than the one afar
Where wandering birds would sing while passing by
And poetry-writing ants would come and meander
My brothers and sisters
Have never ever forgotten about me
Neither would I
We are much kinder than kindness itself

In here
We plough in the morning and shepherd in the afternoon
At night while you’re counting stars indoors
We’d lie on the greens and have a happy rest

Here there are no invaders
Neither ambitions or disappointment
Whenever we’re in reminiscence
We would write our wishes on the clouds
Then let the wind or raindrops
Take them to wherever that’s far
We live on the greens
Where not everyone could reach
The winds in the spring would busy themselves moving
And the rains in the summer would be laden with grief
Then in the autumn, we would die a happy death

We Live on Green Leaves
By Li Xiong
Tr. WANG Yangwen
Hi, sunshine
We live on green leaves

It’s a place happier than those in the distance
Wandering birds will sing when they pass
Poem-writing ants will come sometimes
My brothers and sisters
They never forget me
As I never forget them
We are kinder than kindness itself
Here
We plow fields in the morning, herd sheep in the afternoon
You shut doors and light stars in the evening
We lie on the leaves with happiness
There’s no invaders
No ideals or no desperation
When we miss someone
We write the miss on clouds
